A fascinating slow-growing tree related of Eugenia is the Eugenia sp. leitonii, which is native to eastern Brazil in South America. It can reach heights of 8 to 14 metres and is a semi-deciduous tree with an open, pyramidal crown. To develop more effectively, they prefer dappled shade. The tree is occasionally plucked from the wild for its edible fruits. It is also occasionally grown as an ornamental, particularly for its gorgeous, crimson trunk. A single huge seed is present in the fruit, which has a diameter of about 5 cm. The astringent flavour and subtle sweetness of the thick, meaty pulp are there. Typically, fruit is consumed raw or turned into jams and jellies.
