A medium-sized evergreen tree, almirajo can grow to a height of 9 to 15 metres. It is a rare fruit tree that is only found in some regions of Brazil and the humid jungles of Colombia’s Choco area. Its leaves are ovel-shaped with pointy points, and its huge, unusually-shaped flowers resemble those of closely related Matisia species in appearance. When ripe, fruits have a yellow colour and can be up to 25 cm long and 10 cm wide. Ceam colour pulp is edible and is typically consumed fresh, out of hand. Its edible properties have been described as custard-like to mealy, with a pleasant sweetness and flavour that falls halfway between banana and apple..
