The national fruit of Jamaica, Akee/Blighia Sapida, is a tropical West African family member of the Sapindaceae genus. It is also known as Ackee Apple, Ankye, Achee, Akee, and Ackee. Ackee is related to the lychee fruit and has a delicate, nutty flavour. It can also be planted as an ornamental item in streets and public areas due to its lovely appearance.

The three-celled glossy black, large, oblong to spherical seeds, capped with a soft, creamy, or spongy aril, mature from the glossy red to orange-yellow fruit, which has a pear-like form.

The fruit is rich in proteins, zinc, and vitamins B and C.

Planting and Care

Trees are relatively cold tolerant, with the ability to endure low temperatures and should be planted in full sun for best growth and fruit production.
